This hardy fish should live in a freshwater aquarium with slightly acidic water with a pH of 6 to 7. The ideal Odessa Barb temperature is 70°F to 78°F, and you should maintain a water hardness of 2° to 10° dH. The Odessa Barb is a quick swimmer that requires adequate room to explore.
Odessa Barbs are, on the whole, a relatively peaceful species (although they should not be trusted with any long-finned fish that are slow-moving) and must be maintained in groups of at least 6 specimens due to their shoaling nature.
In the aquarium Colony of Odessa barb in a home aquarium Like most barbs, the Odessa barb is an active and generally peaceful fish that is best kept in a community tank. It is a schooling fish that can become semi-aggressive towards other tank mates if it is not kept in groups of 5 or more individuals.
Diet & Feeding
This species is amenable to a wide array of food types, including flakes, granules, and both freeze-dried and live options like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
The average lifespan of an odessa barb is between 3 to 5 years with good care. A healthy diet, large tank setup, and proper water conditions can all help the fish live up to its maximum lifespan.
Environmental Changes – Anything that alters a fish’s environment can spook the fish into hiding. This can include sudden water changes, temperature shifts, pH changes or chemical imbalances.
The average Odessa Barb size is around 3 inches (8 centimeters) when fully grown. Females usually grow larger than males and have plumper bodies when carrying eggs.
Housing Requirements for Barbs
Adult tinfoil barbs will eventually require a 125 gallon or larger aquarium. Barbs do best in schools of at least 6 to 10 fish and need plenty of swimming space. They will be less stressed and show their best colors in a well decorated aquarium.
