Product Description
Maintain excellent aquarium filtration and support healthy water quality with the Aqua One Black Sponge Pad 35ppi, designed as replacement filter media for compatible Aqua One Aquis 1000 and 1200 external canister filters.
This fine-density 35ppi filter sponge provides effective mechanical and biological filtration, helping remove smaller suspended particles and debris while providing valuable surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise.
The fine open-cell sponge structure captures smaller waste particles that may pass through coarser filter media, including fine fish waste, uneaten food, plant debris and other suspended impurities. This helps reduce unwanted particles circulating throughout the aquarium and contributes to cleaner, clearer water.
In addition to mechanical filtration, the sponge provides an environment for beneficial nitrifying bacteria to establish. These bacteria play an important role in the aquarium nitrogen cycle by helping convert harmful ammonia into nitrite and subsequently nitrate, supporting a healthier aquatic environment.
The reusable sponge construction allows it to be gently rinsed during routine filter maintenance to remove accumulated debris while helping preserve the beneficial bacteria established within the filter media.
Supplied as a convenient two-pack, the Aqua One Black 35ppi Sponge Pads are an ideal replacement for maintaining effective mechanical and biological filtration in compatible Aquis external canister filters.

Understanding 35ppi Filter Sponge
PPI stands for pores per inch and refers to the approximate density of the sponge material.
A 35ppi sponge has a finer structure than a coarse 15ppi sponge. This makes it suitable for capturing smaller suspended particles while providing additional surface area for beneficial bacteria.
Using different sponge densities together creates a multi-stage filtration system:
- Blue 15ppi Coarse Sponge: Captures larger debris and solid waste.
- Black 35ppi Fine Sponge: Helps collect smaller suspended particles and supports biological filtration.
- White Filter Wool: Provides fine mechanical polishing to capture very small particles.
Combining these filtration materials helps support effective mechanical and biological filtration.
Cleaning & Maintenance
To maintain effective filtration and extend the life of the sponge:
- Inspect the sponge regularly for accumulated debris.
- Gently rinse in removed aquarium water during routine filter maintenance.
- Avoid washing with untreated tap water, detergents or household cleaning products.
- Clean when necessary to prevent excessive debris buildup and restricted water flow.
- Replace the sponge if it becomes damaged, deteriorated or loses its structure.
- Avoid replacing all established biological filter media at once to help preserve beneficial bacteria.
