Appearance

The Chinese Algae Eater is a large freshwater fish reaching up to 25–28 cm (10–11 in) in the wild, though in aquariums they average 15 cm (5.9 in). It has an elongated cylindrical body with a sucker-like mouth and rasping teeth. Common coloration is dark gray to black with a white or yellowish stripe from head to tail. Golden varieties are also available.

Origin & Habitat

Native to rivers, streams, and reservoirs of Southeast Asia, including China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Thrives in fast-flowing waters with rocky substrates and abundant vegetation.

Behavior & Social Traits

Generally peaceful but can become territorial with age. Juveniles are efficient algae grazers, using their specialized mouth and teeth to clean aquarium surfaces. Best kept in small groups of three or more to promote natural behavior and reduce aggression.

Diet

Juveniles primarily consume algae, while adults become omnivorous. Feed sinking pellets, spirulina flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms for balanced nutrition.

Aquarium Care

• Tank size: Minimum 200L (53 gallons)

• Water parameters: Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, clean well-filtered water

• Tank setup: Sand or small gravel substrate, rocky caves, hiding spots, live or artificial plants

• Tankmates: Peaceful species compatible with potential territorial behavior, avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish

• Algae control: Effective for algae maintenance, but manual removal may still be needed

Lifespan & Reproduction

Lives approximately 5–10 years. Egg-laying species, can be kept individually or in small groups.
