Tankmates should be small and peaceful, and could include. Avoid large, boisterous tankmates as these tetras are easily intimidated. Much attention must be paid to water quality since Blue Emperors can be sensitive to elevated nitrates and swings in water chemistry.

Water conditions
- Temperature: 76–80° F (24–27° C)
- pH: 5.5–7.0 (acidic water preferred)
- Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Lighting: Subdued lighting
- Substrate: Dark substrate
- Filtration: Good filtration, but avoid strong water currents
- A minimum tank size of 15 gallons (60 liters) is recommended for a small group
- A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a school
