Droncit 50 mg Tablet is an oral tapeworm treatment for dogs and cats. Each tablet contains 50 mg of praziquantel, an active ingredient specifically used to treat susceptible tapeworm infections. It is a targeted tapewormer rather than a broad-spectrum allwormer.
Active Ingredient
-
Praziquantel – 50 mg per tablet
Praziquantel is effective against common tapeworm species affecting dogs and cats, including Dipylidium caninum and Taenia species.

-

-
50 mg praziquantel – Provides a targeted tapeworm treatment.
-
For dogs and cats – Suitable for both species when used according to the appropriate dosage.
-

-

-
Easy to administer – Tablet can be given immediately before or with a meal.
-

Tapeworms Controlled
Droncit is indicated for susceptible tapeworm infections, including:
-
Dipylidium caninum — common flea tapeworm
-
Taenia ovis
-
Taenia pisiformis
-
Taenia hydatigena
-
Taenia taeniaeformis in cats
-
Echinococcus granulosus where applicable
In New Zealand, Hydatid tapeworm has been eradicated since 2002, so the NZ dosing instructions differ from the Australian packaging dose.
New Zealand Dosage
For general tapeworm treatment in New Zealand, the recommended dose is 1 tablet per 20 kg bodyweight (2.5 mg/kg):
| Animal Weight | Dose |
|---|---|
| Up to 10 kg | ½ tablet |
| 11–20 kg | 1 tablet |
| 20–40 kg | 2 tablets |
Droncit is administered as a single oral dose and may be given immediately before or with a meal.
Important: Tapeworm Only
Droncit is specifically a tapeworm treatment. It does not provide the same broad intestinal-worm coverage as an allwormer containing additional active ingredients.
For routine broad-spectrum worming, the manufacturer recommends products such as Drontal or Milbemax where appropriate.
Flea-Related Reinfection
The common flea tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, can be transmitted through infected fleas. If a pet has fleas, treating the tapeworm without addressing the flea infestation can result in reinfection.
Effective flea control for the pet and its environment is therefore important when flea tapeworm is involved.
