Lifespan. Blue Emperor Tetras live for about six years in captivity. Providing your blue emperors with a well-balanced diet and optimal water conditions will improve the chances that your fish will live to reach their full life expectancy.
- Other tetras: Emperor tetras are schooling fish that get along well with other tetras.
- Peaceful catfish: Corydoras catfish and smaller Loricariids are peaceful bottom dwellers that can be good tank mates.
- Pencil fish: These fish are from the same general region as emperor tetras and can be good tank mates.
- Dwarf cichlids: Dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma agassizii can be good tank mates.
- Rasboras: These schooling fish can be good tank mates.
- Temperature: Emperor tetras prefer cooler water temperatures in the 70s °F.
- pH level: Emperor tetras prefer slightly acidic pH levels between 5.0-7.5.
- Water hardness: Emperor tetras prefer moderate water hardness levels between 18-215 ppm.
- Lighting: Emperor tetras prefer subdued lighting.
- Substrate: Emperor tetras prefer dark substrate.
- Filtration: Peat filtration is recommended, but they can also thrive in moderately hard water as long as it’s changed frequently.
