- Small tetras: Neon tetras, celestial pearl danios, emerald raspboras, and similar species
- Small catfish: Corydoras, dwarf corydoras, and Otocinclus
- Other pencilfish: Other species of pencilfish, such as Hockeystick Pencilfish
- Guppies and endlers: These fish can also be good tank mates for golden pencilfish
