Green Phantom pleco

The Green Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis) is a striking freshwater catfish native to fast‑flowing, rocky rivers of the Orinoco and Ventuari in South America. Known for its vibrant green body with yellow spots, this pleco adds colour and interest to medium and large community aquariums.

Size & Lifespan
Green Phantom Plecos grow up to around 15–20 cm (6–8 in) in captivity, making them larger bottom dwellers suitable for spacious aquariums. With proper care they can live for many years.

Tank Requirements

• Tank Size: Recommended ~300 L or more as adults.

• Water Temperature: 25–27 °C (77–81 °F) for optimal comfort.

• pH: 6.5 – 7.5, slightly acidic to neutral.

• Provide strong filtration, good oxygenation, and moderate to strong water movement to mimic their natural fast‑flowing habitat.

• Include driftwood, rocks, caves, and shaded areas for hiding and grazing.

Diet
Green Phantom Plecos are omnivores and algae grazers. They will feed on algae in the tank but also need a varied diet of:

• Algae wafers and sinking catfish pellets

• Blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach

• Occasional protein‑rich foods such as bloodworms or frozen shrimp

Temperament & Compatibility

• Generally peaceful with other community fish, but can become territorial toward other plecos.

• Works well with non‑aggressive tank mates of moderate size that occupy different water levels.

• Avoid overly boisterous or aggressive species that may outcompete them for food or space.

Care Notes

• Requires stable water quality and regular water changes to stay healthy.

• Best added to an established mature aquarium to avoid stress from unstable parameters.
