Product Description
Create a natural and attractive underwater environment with JBL Sansibar Grey 10kg Substrate. This fine-grained, natural grey aquarium sand provides a neutral foundation for freshwater and marine aquariums, enhancing the appearance of colourful fish, aquatic plants and aquarium decorations. Its understated grey colour complements a variety of aquascaping styles, from natural riverbed layouts to modern planted aquariums.
Made from natural, uncoloured sand without artificial additives, JBL Sansibar Grey features a fine grain size of 0.2–0.6 mm. Its smooth, rounded grains are gentle on the sensitive barbels of bottom-dwelling fish, including Corydoras catfish and loaches, making it suitable for species that naturally forage and sift through the substrate.
The fine grain size and dense structure help prevent sludge and organic waste from sinking deeply into the substrate, supporting easier aquarium maintenance. Its water-neutral properties mean it does not release unwanted pollutants or hardness-increasing substances into the aquarium water under normal use.
JBL Sansibar Grey can also be used in planted aquariums to provide a stable base for plant roots. For vigorous plant growth, JBL recommends combining it with a nutrient-rich substrate such as JBL AquaBasis Plus underneath.
The generous 10kg bag is ideal for larger aquariums, new aquarium installations or setups requiring a greater quantity of substrate. It is also suitable for marine aquariums and aquaterrariums.

Directions for Use
- Rinse the substrate with tap water before use to remove fine particles caused by transport.
- Spread evenly across the aquarium base to achieve the desired substrate depth.
- For vigorous plant growth, place a suitable nutrient-rich substrate underneath the sand.
- Fill the aquarium slowly and carefully to avoid disturbing the substrate.
- Maintain the sand with regular aquarium cleaning and careful removal of accumulated waste.
For a substrate layer approximately 5cm deep, JBL provides the following calculation:
Aquarium length (cm) × width (cm) ÷ 140 = approximate kilograms required.
