Panda Corydoras

Overview
The Corydoras panda, also known as Hoplisoma panda, is a small, charismatic freshwater catfish reaching up to 4 cm (1.58 in). Native to the Upper Amazon River Basin in Peru, it is now widely bred in captivity. This peaceful, hardy species is ideal for community aquariums and is best kept in groups of 5 or more due to its social nature. Females are slightly larger and wider, while males are slimmer.

Tank Setup & Environment

• Soft sand substrate for safe foraging

• Plenty of hiding spots: driftwood, rocks, dense plants

• Efficient filtration with moderate water movement and high oxygenation

• Leave a small gap at the water surface for air breathing

Water Conditions

• Temperature: 21–25 °C

• pH: adaptable, provided water quality is maintained

• Suitable for a community aquarium

Diet & Feeding

• Omnivorous: sinking catfish pellets, frozen foods (mosquito larvae, brineshrimp), flake foods

Breeding

• Triggered by large, slightly cooler water changes

• Female holds eggs between pelvic fins in the “T-position” for fertilization

• Eggs are attached to plants, decor, or tank walls; hatch in 4–5 days

• Fry start on finely powdered foods, then newly hatched brineshrimp

Behavior & Temperament

• Peaceful, social, and active bottom dwellers

• Encouraged to emerge by “dither” midwater fish like pencilfish, small tetras, or rasboras
