Product Description
The PetSafe Microchip Cat Door is an electronic cat flap that uses your cat’s existing microchip as a unique identification key. It gives programmed cats selective access while helping prevent unfamiliar cats and other animals from entering your home. The door can store the microchip IDs of up to 40 pets, making it suitable for multi-cat households.
Key Features
-
Microchip-controlled entry – Uses your cat’s existing implanted microchip instead of requiring a special collar.
-
Selective access – Only programmed pets can unlock the door when approaching from outside.
-
Stores up to 40 pets – Suitable for homes with multiple cats.
-
15-digit microchip compatible – Reads compatible FDX-B, 977 and 985 microchips.
-
4-way manual locking system – Choose between unlocked, locked, entry-only and exit-only.
-
Helps keep unwanted cats outside – The microchip reader checks cats approaching from the exterior.
-
Dual automatic locking points – Helps keep the flap securely closed when an unauthorised animal attempts to enter.
-
Energy-efficient design – Weather stripping helps reduce draughts around the flap.
-
Battery powered – Uses four AA alkaline, non-rechargeable batteries.
-
Low-battery indicator – Provides an indication when the batteries need replacing.
-
Optional cat-door key – A compatible PetSafe Microchip Cat Door Key can also be used for pets that do not have a compatible microchip.
How It Works
The cat door is programmed with your cat’s microchip ID. When your cat approaches the door from outside, the reader scans the microchip and checks it against the stored IDs.
If the microchip is recognised, the door unlocks and your cat can push through. If an unprogrammed cat approaches, the door remains locked, helping prevent unwanted animals from entering your home.
The microchip reader is designed to scan the inward-bound cat, meaning the system provides selective entry while still allowing your programmed cat to leave according to the selected lock setting.
Microchip Compatibility
The PetSafe Microchip Cat Door works with compatible 15-digit microchips, including:
-
FDX-B
-
977
-
985
Compatible microchip brands listed by PetSafe include Datamars/PetLink, HomeAgain, AVID, 24PetWatch, AKC Reunite and Banfield.
It is important to check your cat’s microchip number and type before installation to ensure compatibility.
4-Way Locking Options
The manual locking system gives you four different access settings:
| Setting | Function |
|---|---|
| Unlocked | Allows your programmed cat to enter and leave |
| Locked | Prevents entry and exit |
| In Only | Allows your cat to come inside but prevents it from leaving |
| Out Only | Allows your cat to leave but prevents it from coming back inside |
This gives you control over your cat’s outdoor access, particularly at night, during bad weather or when you want your cat to remain indoors.
Multi-Cat Household
The door can store up to 40 individual pet microchip IDs, so several cats can use the same cat door without needing separate collars or keys. Each cat’s microchip is programmed individually into the door.
Installation
The PetSafe Microchip Cat Door is designed for DIY installation in most:
-
Wooden doors
-
PVC doors
-
uPVC doors
The standard package includes a cutting template, screws and screw plugs to assist with installation.
For metal or metal-core doors, a separate Microchip Installation Adaptor is required because metal can interfere with the microchip reader.
For glass doors or windows, the appropriate installation method and adaptor depend on the type of glass. Double-pane and tempered glass generally require the opening to be prepared during manufacture, so a professional glazier should be used.
For wall installation, the Microchip Installation Adaptor is required. Depending on wall thickness, additional Microchip Cat Door Tunnel Extensions may also be needed. Each extension adds approximately 50 mm / 2 inches of tunnel length.

Important Installation Note
Before cutting the door, PetSafe recommends programming your cat and testing the microchip reader at the intended installation location. This is particularly important because metal and certain installation materials can affect the reader’s performance.
The electronic tunnel should not be cut or modified, as important components are contained within the tunnel and altering it can affect the cat door’s operation.
