Product Description

Maintain a healthy and well-filtered aquarium with the Aqua One Black Sponge Pad 35ppi, designed as replacement filter media for compatible Aqua One Aquis 500 and 700 external canister filters.

This fine-density 35ppi filter sponge provides effective mechanical and biological filtration, helping remove smaller suspended particles and debris from aquarium water while offering valuable surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise.

The fine open-cell sponge structure captures smaller waste particles that may pass through coarser filter sponges. It helps collect fine fish waste, uneaten food, plant debris and other suspended impurities, supporting cleaner and clearer aquarium water.

In addition to mechanical filtration, the sponge provides a large surface area for beneficial nitrifying bacteria to establish. These bacteria play an important role in biological filtration by helping break down harmful ammonia and nitrite produced by fish waste and decomposing organic matter.

The reusable sponge design makes it a practical and economical choice for ongoing aquarium maintenance. It can be gently rinsed when required to remove accumulated debris while helping preserve the beneficial bacteria living within the filter media.

Supplied as a convenient two-pack, the Aqua One Black 35ppi Sponge Pads are ideal for maintaining effective filtration in compatible Aquis external canister filters.

Understanding 35ppi Filter Sponge

PPI refers to pores per inch and indicates the approximate density of the sponge material.

A 35ppi sponge has a finer structure than a coarse 15ppi sponge, making it suitable for capturing smaller particles while providing additional surface area for beneficial bacteria.

Using different sponge densities together creates a multi-stage filtration system:

• 15ppi Coarse Sponge: Captures larger debris and solid waste.
• 35ppi Fine Sponge: Helps collect smaller suspended particles and supports biological filtration.
• Filter Wool: Provides fine mechanical polishing to capture very small particles.

Combining these filtration materials helps support effective mechanical and biological filtration.

Cleaning & Maintenance

To maintain effective filtration:

• Inspect the sponge regularly for accumulated debris.
• Gently rinse in removed aquarium water during routine filter maintenance.
• Avoid washing with untreated tap water, detergents or household cleaning products.
• Do not allow excessive debris buildup to restrict water flow.
• Replace the sponge if it becomes damaged or starts deteriorating.
• Avoid replacing all established biological filter media at once to help preserve beneficial bacteria.
