Active Ingredient
Imidacloprid — 100 g/L
Advantage’s active constituent is imidacloprid at 100 g/L. It spreads from the application site across the dog’s skin and coat, remaining primarily within the oily layer of the skin and fur.
Fleas are killed when they come into contact with the treated skin or coat. Because fleas don’t have to bite the dog to be killed, Advantage can help reduce the irritation associated with flea bites.
What Does Advantage Treat?
Advantage for dogs is indicated for:
-
Adult fleas
-
Flea larvae in the pet’s surroundings
-
Lice on dogs
It can also be used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) where flea control is required.
How Advantage Works
After application, imidacloprid spreads over the dog’s skin and coat through the oily layer.
When fleas come into contact with treated skin or hair, imidacloprid affects their nervous system, resulting in paralysis and death.
Advantage also kills flea larvae shed into the pet’s environment, helping to interrupt the flea life cycle.
This contact action means fleas do not need to take a blood meal before being affected.
Fast Flea Action
Advantage is designed to act quickly:
-
Fleas can be stopped from biting within approximately 3–5 minutes
-
Adult and larval fleas can begin being killed within approximately 20 minutes
-
A single application provides approximately 4 weeks of flea control
Severe infestations may require additional treatment according to the product label and veterinary advice.
How to Apply
Step 1 — Remove the applicator
Remove the required tube from the package.
Hold the tube upright and away from yourself and pull off the cap.
Step 2 — Open the tube
Reverse the cap and push it back onto the tube.
Twist the cap to break the seal, then remove the cap.
Step 3 — Prepare your dog
Your dog should be standing for application.
For dogs under 25 kg, including dogs in the 4–10 kg weight range, part the hair between the shoulder blades until the skin is clearly visible.
Step 4 — Apply
Place the tip of the tube directly against the skin and squeeze the tube firmly twice to apply the entire contents.
For a 4–10 kg dog, one tube from the appropriate 4–10 kg pack is used per treatment.
Step 5 — Allow to dry
Allow the treated area to dry naturally.
Do not allow people or children to touch the treated area until it is completely dry.
Treatment Schedule
Advantage is intended as a monthly treatment.
One application lasts approximately 4 weeks.
For ongoing flea protection, continue treatment at the recommended monthly interval and follow the current product label.
What You Get in the 4-Pack
The 4-pack contains four individual applications.
1 application = approximately 4 weeks
4 applications = approximately 4 months of monthly treatments, assuming treatments are administered at the recommended monthly interval.
Suitable Dogs
The 4–10 kg presentation is intended for dogs weighing 4 to 10 kg.
It is important to weigh your dog before selecting the product, particularly if your dog is close to a weight-band boundary.
Do not use a 4–10 kg tube on a dog outside the specified weight range.
Puppies
Advantage is listed by Elanco NZ as being safe for use on puppies from any age, when the appropriate weight-based product and label directions are followed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Advantage is listed as safe for use in pregnant and lactating animals.
Bathing & Swimming
Advantage can remain effective if your dog gets wet occasionally.
However, frequent swimming or washing can shorten the duration of flea control.
Elanco recommends bathing your dog before application where possible. If bathing between treatments, use a general grooming shampoo and ensure your dog is dry before applying Advantage.
Important Application Precautions
-
For external use only.
-
Apply directly to the skin, not simply onto the fur.
-
Use the product corresponding to your dog’s current body weight.
-
Avoid contact with the dog’s eyes and mouth.
-
Do not allow children or people to touch the treated area until it is completely dry.
-
Do not use Advantage formulated for dogs on cats.
-
Follow the current NZ product label for all application and safety instructions.
Storage
-
Store below 30°C / room temperature.
-
Keep in the original packaging.
-
Keep out of reach of children.
-
Do not contaminate water, food or animal feed during storage or disposal.
Disposal
After use, dispose of the empty applicator according to the product label. Elanco NZ advises wrapping used tubes in paper and placing them in the rubbish.
Do not dispose of the product in waterways.
Flea Control in the Home
Treating the dog is only part of managing an established flea infestation.
Because flea eggs and larvae can be present in the environment, consistent treatment of pets can help break the flea life cycle. Elanco recommends maintaining flea control on all pets in the household year-round to help protect both pets and the home.
Why Choose Advantage?
Advantage provides a simple monthly approach to flea control for small and medium-sized dogs.
Its contact-action formula kills fleas without requiring them to bite, while also killing flea larvae in the pet’s surroundings. The convenient spot-on application makes it easy to incorporate into a regular parasite-control routine.
