Water parameters
- Temperature: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
- pH: 5.0–7.5, with a preference for more acidic water
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Appearance:
- Adult males have elongated dorsal and caudal fins, creating a “trident” tail
- Females are usually smaller and thicker than males
Habitat:
- Originates from the slow-moving rivers and streams of Colombia
- Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water
- Thrives in well-planted tanks that mimic their natural habitat
Behavior:
- Peaceful and social, and should be kept in schools of at least 6 to 10 fish
- Males will compete for females, but this aggression is not a problem in aquariums with ample space and plenty of decor
Diet:
- Prefers a varied diet of high-quality flakes, small live or frozen foods, and vegetable matter
Tankmates:
- Can be kept with other peaceful, small fish
- Adult dwarf shrimp may be safe tankmates, but adult Black Emperor Tetras may eat small dwarf shrimp and their fry
