It grows to a maximum overall length of about 3.5 cm (1.4 in). Like the other Paracheirodon species, the green neon tetra is kept as an aquarium fish, but it is less commonly seen than either the neon tetra or the cardinal tetra. P. simulans is also sometimes called the blue or false neon.
Tank mates
Green neon tetras are schooling fish that do well with other peaceful fish that are similar in size or slightly larger. Some good tank mates for green neon tetras include:
- Cory catfish
- Dwarf gourami
- Bristlenose catfish
- Rasboras
- Small danios
- Rainbowfish
- Livebearers
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral
- Hardness: 3–10 dGH, soft to moderately hard
- Nitrate: Less than 20 ppm
Green neon tetras are small, peaceful fish that are popular with aquascapers. They are known for their iridescent blue-green line that runs down their side.
- Use a tank that’s at least 10 gallons (40 liters)
- Use a soft substrate, such as black sand
- Add floating plants and driftwood to create hiding places
- Use moderate lighting to show off their colors
- Use a gentle filtration system
- Perform regular water changes (about 20% weekly)
- Feed them a varied diet of plant matter and other foods
- Green neon tetras are sensitive to water chemistry changes
- Avoid adding them to a startup tank
